Fishing, boating and swimming are all available courtesy of the Pisuerga River, which passes through this otherwise dry Castilian city. Valladolid's 20,000-strong student population ensures there are plenty of lively bars and discos to keep you entertained until the small hours.

The charming, fairytale quality of Segovia is best noted in its twisting alleys sparkling with Romanesque churches. Picos de Europa National Park is characterised by its beech tree forests and charming mountain villages.

The Spanish capital of Madrid is a two-hour drive to the southeast via the N-403 national road and A-6 motorway. Talgo 200 trains arrive from Madrid’s Chamartin and Atocha stations, and several buses a day arrive from the Estacion sur de Autobuses in the capital. The city's Vallanubla Airport has daily flights to and from Barcelona and serves all the major European capitals.
