Torremolinos
Torremolinos, on Spain’s Costa del Sol, is one of the country’s liveliest holiday resorts, featuring a lovely beach area and promenade, as well as some outstanding nearby attractions.
The renowned shopping street of Calle San Miguel, which stretches from the main street almost to the seafront, has some excellent and varied stores. It is easy to escape the throngs of visitors on the beaches and in the town by heading for one of the resort’s many beautiful public gardens. These gardens are well looked after and feature over a thousand species of trees.
Top-class restaurants and cheap fast food chains abound, and it’s not hard to find a raging bar or nightclub decked out with a monstrous sound system and swimming pool. Torremolinos also has more laid-back drinking establishments, which are lavishly decorated and cater to a less hedonistic clientele.
The blue flag beaches of La Carihuela and Bajondillo are the main draw and are joined together by promenades offering pleasant strolling. Chiringuitos (beach bars) and a host of eateries line the promenades. The historic section of Torremolinos is comprised of the old fishing village of La Carihuela, featuring picturesque houses and delicious seafood, and offering a different insight into life in this bustling resort.
There is much to see by car east and west of the resort. Málaga is the coast’s main town with a good deal of history, best seen in the cathedral and its interesting museum; while Nerja, to the east, is famous for its 3,000-year-old caves. To the west is Benalmadena with its lovely town centre, bustling square and attractive marina; the water sports resort of Fuengirola; and ritzy Marbella.
For those travelling by car, the E-15 highway serves the Costa del Sol from France and Barcelona; from Madrid, take the E-5. Trains leave Madrid all day on the south coast line serving Málaga, the airport and most of the Costa’s resorts. Buses leave Madrid’s Estacion sur de Autobuses to Málaga; from here, buses go to Torremolinos twice an hour. Málaga’s Picasso International Airport receives traffic from all over Europe and is well connected by train to Torremolinos.
