Tenerife has two international airports, as flying is the only practical way to reach these remote islands. You can come by ferry from Cadiz, but they only run once a week.
If you enjoy the resort atmosphere, you will love Puerto de la Cruz, which is a gorgeous old town basking in sunshine. Las Lonjas is a picturesque cobbled pedestrian street and a great place for a casual stroll to soak up the atmosphere. The church of San Francisco and San Juan and the old Royal Customs
House are interesting old buildings and the Plaza del Europe is a wonderful fortress with a great view over the ocean.
Tenerife has 400 years of settlement behind it and is an absorbing mix of historical interest, natural wonders and an efficient tourist infrastructure. Accommodation is plentiful and there are many fine restaurants.
Driving yourself is an ideal way to make the most of Tenerife. You can visit the old capital of La Laguna, which is home to some beautiful churches such as Santo
Domingo. Bajamar and Punta del Hidalgo are fashionable resorts with excellent facilities to complement their dramatic natural landscapes.
The rural villages in the Anaga mountain region offer panoramic views and, in the Orotava Mountains, there are many charming hiking paths. On the west coast are
the amazing Cliffs of the Giants, enormous, sheer rock walls falling away to the surf below. The popular resort town of Los Cristianos, with a vibrant ambience and great eating-places, is a fun place to stay. The Parque Nacional de las Caņadas del Teide includes an enormous volcanic crater 48kms in circumference, out of which rises Mount Teide (Spain's highest peak).
The most popular beaches include: Playa de Las Teresitas, Playa San Marcos, and the well developed, glitzy, Playa de Las Americas. Lago Martianez is a good freshwater alternative.
