Palma is a vibrant town, famous for its unrivalled nightlife. Numerous bodegas, restaurants, tapas bars and discos are found in and around the old town. If you prefer more refined culture, head to the commendable Museu de Mallorca. The winter festival of San Sebastián, the patron saint of Palma, sets the whole town buzzing and shouldn't be missed.
Palma is one of the busiest and liveliest towns in the Balearic Islands and a good gateway to the island of Mallorca. With more than a thousand years of history, excellent food, plenty of sunshine, and fantastic natural scenery, it remains one of the Mediterranean's most popular island destinations.
Palma's old town is delightful, with an odd mix of cobbled lanes and Gothic architecture. The magnificent 13th century Gothic cathedral, La Seo, takes central stage. Moorish influences have been left behind in the form of the Palau de l'Almudaina (Moslem castle) and Banyas Arabas (Arab baths). Another castle, Bellvar, is also worth visiting.
Many come to Palma for sun and sea, and the principal beach area is a waterfront cluster of hotels and guesthouses along a lovely beach located a 10-minute drive from the old town. Walking out along the beach front you can also find some wonderful nature trails to stroll along. Deiŕ-Soller is a famous ancient path along the west coast.
Hiring a car to appreciate nearby attractions is popular and some highlights include: Valldemossa - a former monastery with lovely gardens and palatial rooms, Alcúdia, an historic town where remains of the Roman city of Pollčtia have been excavated, the lovely Parc Natural de l'Albufera, Coves del Drac (Caves of the Dragon), and of course the many secluded, lovely beaches.
Palma de Mallorca Airport receives numerous charter flights in the season and a busy schedule of arrivals from many European cities. Visitors from North America and elsewhere usually arrive via a Barcelona, Madrid or London connection. Inter-Balearic flights are frequent.
