Nerja is blessed with fantastic views all the way around, being bordered by both the dramatic Sierra Nevada and the Sierra Almijara mountains whose snow-capped peaks can be glimpsed from the town’s nearby golden sands.
Nerja lies at the eastern end of the Costa del Sol, between the Mediterranean Sea and the huge mountains of the Sierra Nevada range. One of Spain’s most productive agricultural areas, it is often called the ‘garden of Europe’ because of its wonderfully fertile soil.
Nerja old town retains its unspoilt charm, partly due to dazzling whitewashed houses and narrow winding streets, which can be explored by the many novelty horse-drawn carriages for hire. When you’re ready for a rest, there are plenty of quaint cafés and bars where you can enjoy coffee, a glass of wine, or some delicious Spanish tapas.
The town’s most important features include El Salvador Church, built in the 17th century in a mix of baroque and Moorish styles, and the Gardens of Capistrano Playa, which are located near Burriana beach. Another highlight is the Balcón de Europa (Balcony of Europe), which comprises an extensive walkway following the top of a huge cliff, which offers postcard views of the sea and coastline way down below. This was also once the site of a large Moorish castle.
Of course one of Nerja’s main attractions is the beautiful beaches which run for several kilometres. If you’re not a sun-worshipper and want some action, there are all kinds of water sports on offer, including: scuba diving, sailing and waterskiing.
Also worth a visit are the interesting caves adorned with prehistoric paintings, just a few kilometres from town. You might even be lucky enough to catch one of the summertime music performances that take place when one of the caves temporarily becomes a concert hall.
If you are travelling by road, Nerja is on the N340 coastal highway east of Malaga. At least 10 buses per day make the journey of 1 hour, 30 minutes from Málaga. From Almería, four buses a day make the three-hour trip. You cannot fly into Nerja but Malaga Airport is only 50kms away and is connected to many major European cities.
