Murcia is connected to the Mediterranean cities by the A7 highway, and to the major Andalusian cities by the A92. Trains and buses link Murcia to other parts of Spain and some parts of Europe, but buses are not always reliable. Murcia’s San Javier Airport is located about 56kms from the city, but has few international connections.
Murcia is the capital of Murcia region, Murcia is a modern city located near the Costa Brava. It has many monuments and historical attractions, good museums, fine dining and a lively nightlife.
The city has a wide variety of shops in which to browse or pick up gifts and souvenirs, including art shops, boutiques and large shopping malls such as the Corte Inglés. Scattered about the city are a number of pleasant squares with atmospheric cafés in which to sample tapas or enjoy drinks. The local university ensures a thriving nightlife characterised by a youthful vitality.
The city’s most notable attraction is the Cathedral de Santa Maria, which was originally built in the 14th century and rebuilt in 1735 after it was devastated by a flood. The cathedral’s tower offers a splendid view over the city. The Episcopal Palace is an additional historical building that is worth visiting, along with several of the city’s churches.
Another superb attraction is the Museo de Salzillo, where polychrome wood sculptures crafted by Francisco Salzillo are displayed. The Museo de Arqueología is one of the finest archaeological museums in all of Spain. It documents life in Murcia province from prehistoric times, using displays of mosaics, pottery fragments, Roman coins, ceramics and other artefacts.
Many of the surrounding towns and villages have lovely beaches and market days which are fun to visit. Lloret de Mar has a beautiful oceanfront walkway that is lined with palm trees, and a beach of coarse, golden sand; while Estartit offers excellent scuba diving. Calpe is known for its many seafood restaurants around the port; while Altea has a vibrant seafront marketplace.
