Mahon
Mahon has its own airport which receives flights from all major European cities. Visitors from farther afield will connect via Lisbon or Madrid. It is also possible to take a ferry to Mahon from mainland Spain, Ibiza or Majorca.
The island is divided into two main areas: the town centre and the harbour area. The town shows clear evidence of the years of British rule in its elegant Georgian architecture. The oldest historical monument in Mahon is the remaining section of the old city wall, the Arch de San Roque.
Mahon is a fabulous holiday destination, being relatively free of tourists, filled with history and blessed with a wonderful climate. It has been the capital of Spain’s Minorca island since 1721, when the British recognised the advantages of its large natural harbour.
The 17th century Town Hall is located on the old town square, and nearby is the Plaza de la Conquesta, featuring a monument to the island’s liberator, King Alfonso III. At Esglesia de Santa Maria la Major there is a massive, Swiss-made organ that has over 3,000 pipes, and was brought to Mahon during the Napoleonic wars.
Also of interest is the Xoriguer Gin Distillery, where the renowned Minorcan gin is still made according to ancient traditional methods. Overlooking the harbour is an old British mansion, Golden Farm, where Admiral Lord Nelson once lived. Mahon is also home to the oldest opera house in Spain.
The long harbour-front is the best place to go for fine dining. It features elegant restaurants with fabulous views on to the ocean and of yachts moored in the harbour.
Although the historical sights are worth visiting, most travellers come to Minorca for its lovely beaches, the bulk of which are located on the flat, southern coast of the island. The northern end of the island is vastly different in appearance, but scenically striking, with rocky expanses covered with pine trees.
