The capital of Spain, Madrid is a magnificent city with much to offer the visitor. You will see wonderful architecture and lovely boulevards, with the added bonus of a choice of superb restaurants and accommodation.
Barajas International Airport, northeast of Madrid, connects the city with most major European capitals. Trains connect most of Spain's provinces but are quite expensive. Travelling by car, particularly if there are two or three people, is often the most economical way to make the most of your visit.
The nearby provinces are well worth exploring by car. Alcala de Henares, only 30 kms from Madrid, is the birthplace of Cervantes and is home to many
beautiful buildings such as San Bernando Convent (c.1618). San Loranzo de El Escorial should not be missed. Felipe II built the royal palace in this
gorgeous village and many of Spain's royals are buried in the astonishing Panteon de los Reyes.
In the oldest area of Madrid you can see Puerta del Sol and Casa de Correos, which is the seat of government. The official symbol of Madrid is the statue of El Oso y El Madrono, located in the same area. Plaza Mayor is a vast square commissioned by Felipe II for executions, bullfights and public gatherings.
Not too far away, Cuchilleros opens out into the Plaza de Puerta Cerrada. Nearby is the lovely baroque San Miguel church, designed in the 18th century according to Italian baroque styles. In the Plaza de la Villa there are several buildings with varied historic interest, such as the Casa de Cisneros, constructed in 1537 for Cardinal Cisneros.
Segovia, in the province of Castilla de Leon, has a marvellous Roman aqueduct and the spectacular Castle Alcazar is an interesting place to drive to.
