Madeira

Madeira is often referred to by locals as a ‘floating garden’, due to the profusion of lush, semi-tropical vegetation on the island. This contrasts strikingly with the rugged, volcanic landscape, making the area one of spectacular natural beauty.

Madeira’s capital, Funchal, has several historical buildings that will delight history buffs and architecture enthusiasts alike. The city’s churches are particularly notable and include: the 15th century cathedral, with a Manualine pulpit; the 17th century churches of Carmo; and Santa Maria Maior, with its baroque façade.

The Portuguese archipelago of Madeira is made up of Madeira and Porto Santo, the former being the larger and more populated island. Madeira lies 800kms from the African coast and 1000kms southwest of Lisbon.

There are numerous daytime leisure activities on offer, with strolling around Funchal’s gorgeous parks and gardens being one possibility. The clear blue sea surrounding the island is also an inviting option, as it maintains a mild temperature of between 18C and 22C all year round.

For a look at local culture and a spell of shopping, visit the Funchal Workers Market, where a variety of local goods are sold, including fish, fruit, flowers and handicrafts. Additionally, the lively City Market, at Plaça do Comércio every Saturday, sells a wide selection of food and crafts, and is a good place to pick up gifts or souvenirs.

Fishing charters are on offer for those interested – and the ocean off the archipelago is teeming with a wide variety of game fish, including tuna, marlin and wahoo. By night, those looking for a bit of fun are sure to find it at Funchal’s casino or one of its bars or discotheques.

Outside of Funchal at Cabo Girao and Estreito de Camara dos Lobos is Madeira's wine production centre. Those interested in the methods used in wine production should visit the Adegas de São Francisco, which offers tours showing how wine is made and stored.

For a change of scenery, hop over to Porto Santo, which can easily be reached by boat or by air from Madeira. The island is known for its superb golden beaches and is perfect for swimming or seaside walks.

The airlines serving Madeira are TAP Air Portugal and GB Airways. Air Portugal currently operates two weekly direct flights from London to Madeira, and a daily flight via Lisbon. There are no regular ferries to the island, although some cruise ships do visit Madeira.
