Jerez

Jerez de la Frontera is the capital of the Andalusia. It has made an international name for itself with its excellent sherry and the passion of its locals for flamenco dancing, horses and bullfighting. It is a vibrant and lively city that has retained its cultural and historical heritage, and is a fantastic holiday destination.

In close proximity to Jerez are many fabulous beaches along the Costa de la Luz. Alternatively, the mountain settlements of the White Village Route are nearby, and a visit here is an interesting and scenic excursion from the city.

The old centre, which has been declared a Historical Artistic area, is brimming with picturesque streets and squares where you can see fountains, orange trees, palaces, churches and sherry bodegas. San Miguel Square is a good starting point for an exploration of the area – here you can see the Fortress, with a distinctive Arab influence evident in its walls and decorative details. You can also wander on to San Dionisio Church and the Covent of San Francisco, a beautiful 13th century structure.

Visiting the Andalusian Flamenco Centre is an essential part of any trip to Jerez. It is situated on the border of the Santiago district, where Jerez’s flamenco roots are at their strongest. The Royal Andalusian School of the Equestrian Art is equally as compelling; here you can see the area’s famous Andalusian horses training and performing.

Eating and drinking are an integral part of the local culture, and there are scores of restaurants and bars dotted around Jerez. The old city is a particularly atmospheric place. The wines, sherries and brandies of the region are not reserved only for drinking, but are used in many local recipes to add extra flavour to meat or fish. The main shopping district is centred on the Plaza Romero Martinez and Plaza del Arenal.

>From Seville to Jerez and Cádiz, you can choose between the N-IV and the faster A4 toll road. Jerez is just half an hour from the ancient port of Cadiz by train or car. Jerez Airport is located five kilometres north of the city. Iberia flies daily to Madrid and Barcelona, and Ryanair flies weekly to London Stansted.
