Ibiza is full of historical buildings and monuments, many of which date back hundreds of years. The historic area of Dalt Vila and Ibiza’s medieval city walls have been designated UNESCO World Heritage sites and are recommended attractions for history buffs. The Murallas de Ibiza (city walls) feature eight bastions, several main gates, Roman statues and spectacular views of Ibiza, the harbour and the nearby island of Formantera.
Ferry and flights are the only two ways to get to this Balearic island off the eastern coast of Spain. Direct flights to Ibiza are available from most European cities. Ferries run between the island and Barcelona and Valencia.
In recent years, Ibiza has become known as a party holiday destination for the younger, club-going set. The island has far more to offer than just its nightlife, however. Fragrant pine groves, stunning beaches and beautiful old whitewashed towns permeate this Mediterranean island, making it a delightful place to visit, especially out of season.
Discovered in 1907, the Cova d’es Culleram is a famous cave in the San Vincente area of the island. In the days of the Cathaginian rulers, it was a temple to the goddess Tanoit. A large number of treasures were found inside the cave and are now exhibited in the Museu Arqueologic at Dalt Vila.
Es Vedrá Rock is situated at Cala d’Hort beach and is one of Ibiza’s well-known attractions. It stands almost 400m above sea level and is particularly spectacular at sunset. Boat rides are available, allowing for closer viewing.
There’s no shortage of leisure and entertainment options on Ibiza, with the coast and its turquoise Mediterranean waters providing the fun by day, and the numerous restaurants, beach bars and nightclubs supplying the action by night. The island is also a good place for shopping, with many fashionable boutiques and street-side stalls.
Located close to Ibiza, and accessible by ferry, the island of Formentera has salt marshes, orchards, farmers and fishermen. It is small and quiet, and life is lived at a slow pace here. The island makes for a great daytrip if you’re feeling like a change of scenery.
