Girona can be reached by road via the CG1 motorway. The city is linked by train and bus to all parts of Spain and many parts of Europe. Girona Airport is located nine kilometres from the city, and offers good domestic connections and limited European international services.
Girona is situated in the Ter Valley, between the mountain ranges of the Gavarres and the Guillerie, and on the banks of the Onyar River. The city was first a Roman settlement, and you can still see the ruins of an ancient Roman complex near Gironella Tower.
The Museu Arqueològic traces the country’s history from the Paleolithic to the Visigothic periods, and displays artefacts that have been discovered in nearby excavations. It is housed in a Romanesque church and cloister from the 11th and 12th centuries. The Musueu d’Art, in a former Romanesque and Gothic Episcopal palace, exhibits artworks from a time span of over 10 centuries.
The city’s most significant attraction is the 14th century cathedral, which is a mixture of Gothic, Romanesque and Catalán baroque styles. It contains many works of art, including the Tapestry of Creation, a Romanesque embroidery dating from the 11th or 12th century and depicting the Garden of Eden with humans and animals. It also houses an ancient manuscript containing an illustrated commentary on the Book of the Apocalypse.
Another noteworthy building is the Església de Sant Feliu, which was constructed between the 14th and 17th centuries. It has Romanesque arches and pillars, a Gothic central nave and a distinctive bell tower with eight pinnacles and one central tower, each supported on an octagonal central base.
Within driving distance of Girona is Barcelona, featuring many impressive historical buildings, as well as some fabulous museums and galleries. Also fairly close by is Pamplona, an interesting city to visit, particularly in April when visitors can ‘run with the bulls’ during the San Fermin festival.
