Barcelona

Barcelona is a truly astounding city that captivated many of its visitors and has enjoyed renewed interest since hosting the 1992 Olympic Games. It has a wonderfully sophisticated, cosmopolitan atmosphere, incredible architecture and history, a lovely beach and excellent food and accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets.

When in Barcelona it's difficult to miss the startling architecture of the eccentric genius Antonio Gaudi, particularly the amazing (unfinished) Sagrada Familia Cathedral and bizarre la Pedrera apartment block.

Parc Guell is an interesting place to spend some time. Another example of Gaudi's odd imagination, it features giant decorative lizards, mosaics and twisted stone pavilions and offers excellent views of the city from the hills behind.

The famous avenue of Las Ramblas is a fine stroll from the entertainment area of Port Vell into the city, terminating at the stately Placa de Catalunya. Las Ramblas is lined with buskers, souvenir shops and pavement cafes.

Montjuïc presides over the port and city and is home to some fine art galleries, leisure attractions, soothing parks and the main group of Olympic sites. Plaça d'Espanya, Parc Joan Miró, Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya and a series of terraces with photo-friendly fountain shows are highlights in this area.

The Monestir de Montserrat at Tibidabo is reached by a glass lift rising 115 metres. The monastery is nestled amid strange rocky formations and many visitors are attracted to its La Moreneta (the Black Virgin).

The Barri Gotic, (old town), which sandwiches Las Ramblas, is packed with winding streets, medieval buildings, rowdy tapas bars, mouth watering paella restaurants and cheap pensiones. There are many fine beaches near the city, and plenty more along the Costa Blanca that can be easily accessed by car. You will certainly want to drive along the coastline towards the spectacular mountains.

Barcelona International Airport receives flights from all over Europe and several North American cities. Trains and buses are available for travel throughout Spain but distances can be quite large. Hire car is the most popular mode of travel.
