A car is a must on the Algarve. There are so many special coastal villages and incredible cliff top vistas to admire. Sagres, with its magnificent 14th century fortress, is dramatically situated on the cliff-edges of mainland Europe's westernmost point.
Faro is the main gateway to the Algarve and is still surrounded by the remains of Roman walls. The Prade Dom Francisco Gomes port area is delightful and the Sao Francisco Church and Nossa Senhora da Assuncao Convent are both well worth a visit. Accommodation is readily available and Faro boasts many interesting restaurants to suit all tastes.
Lagos, with its coastal location, is extremely popular. With its sweeping beach, Meia Praia, and its picturesque marina, Lagos has the added attractions of the old slave market and the Forte do Pau da Bandeira.
By car you can visit and explore Silvres, Tavira, Monchique and many other charming coastal resorts, all of which offer interesting historic sites and superb seascapes. The roads are well maintained and navigation is easy. Buses run frequently between all Algarve towns, but many interesting attractions will only be glimpsed.
Faro International Airport is the main gateway to the Algarve, with regular flights to many European cities and a regular bus and taxi service into the city. Transatlantic and long haul visitors usually connect via Lisbon, Madrid or other European hubs.
